Skin Tone

Pigment is colour! Special cells within the skin called melanocytes produce melanin, which is what colours your skin, hair and even your eyes. In its various forms, melanin provides photoprotection but when melanin is produced irregularly it can result in hyperpigmentation (too much melanin is produced) or Hypopigmentation (not enough melanin is produced).

Common concerns resulting from Hyperpigmentation include freckles, sunspots, melasma, chloasma, seborrheic keratosis and birthmarks. These can be worsened by the use of certain products, such as alcohol based products, sun exposure or exposure to extreme heat.

The factors that might effect pigmentation include:

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Skin Type
  • Sun Exposure
  • Injury
  • Hormones
  • Pregnancy
  • Illness
  • Acne
